My name is Morgan Showen, and I am running to represent Ohio’s 54th House District, which encompasses portions of Warren County and Butler County. I’m running for State Representative because now, more than ever, we need real leadership to combat the ever-growing challenges our state now faces.
Since I was old enough to drive, I got a job working upwards of 60 hours a week every summer to afford college. After I would get home from work late at night, I would sit down at the kitchen table and start reading the news. When Ohio was in the headlines, the reports of job losses and new laws restricting a woman’s right to choose made me understand why young people were leaving our state.
The inaction on passing sensible gun legislation to curb our nation’s epidemic of gun violence hit home when in 32 seconds nine people were gunned down in Dayton by a man with an assault rifle. For my generation, the possibility of losing a classmate or a sibling has become all too common. And it is the exact reason why we are going to succeed in ending gun violence in America. Our generation will no longer wait on the sidelines to take action when others would tell us to wait our turn. That’s why I spoke at the 2018 Ann Arbor March for Our Lives and it’s why I am running for office — these crises cannot wait.
Having now spent the last several years lobbying members of Congress and state legislators, working on multiple campaigns, and writing my own policy proposals, I believe I have the experience necessary to deliver change for our state. The current representative for our district, Paul Zeltwanger, has proven time and again to be the least effective member of the House. From peddling in coronavirus conspiracy theories to supporting the impeachment of Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Zeltwanger is undoubtedly an embarrassment to our community and cannot be allowed to make state government his occasional hobby for another two years.
Our current representation in Columbus is unengaged, ineffective, and focused on an extreme agenda not supported by the majority of Ohioans. District 54 deserves a state representative who will fight to expand affordable health coverage, support the resources we need to protect public health, and provide a concrete plan to battle COVID-19. I am running to be that representative and bring a new generation of leadership to the Statehouse.
