Meet the Candidate: Nancy Day-Achauer
I’m Nancy Day-Achauer and I’m running for State Representative in District 23 because I am tired of out-of-touch politicians that focus on their special interests instead of creating opportunities for all Ohioans to be successful and thrive.
As a pastor who has worked in urban, suburban and rural communities, I see people struggle to be successful and provide a better future for their families.
They don’t want handouts, they want opportunities for good paying careers, our older adults want to age in place with dignity, families want quality public education and everyone wants their community to be safe and prosper.
I have spent the last seven years working hard as a community advocate and grassroots organizer on the west side of Columbus addressing the opiate epidemic, senior services, food insecurity, and homelessness. I don’t just talk about these issues, I get things done by listening to the community, creating partnerships and collaborating with organizations.
Most recently, I launched a senior services initiative to bring services to the Hilltop, a community with no services for older adults. This initiative resulted in the launch of Ville on the Hill, a program to help older adults age in place. Prior to that initiative, I worked with a group of residents to open a homeless resource center on the Westside that not only provides the typical services such as food and clothing, it also gets people into residential drug treatment and diverts people from panhandling by paying them to work.
For the past four years, I have been providing community education on addiction and the opiate epidemic as a member of the Columbus and Franklin County Addiction Plan. And five years ago, I partnered with organizations in Prairie Township to provide a free year-round produce distribution because the township doesn’t have a public food pantry.
In my conversations with people in the community, I have heard about many issues that matter to them including jobs that can support a family, lower prescription drug costs, housing that’s affordable, secure options for older adults and quality public education. I will work across the aisle to address these issues which will improve the quality of life for Ohioans.
I have fought long and hard to make life better in the communities I serve and as a State Representative, I promise I will continue to fight for all Ohioans so we can all be successful and thrive.
