Meet the Candidate: Rep. Jessica Miranda
Mother. Small Business Owner. Education Advocate. Conceal to Carry Permit Holder. Wife. State Representative.
There’s no denying it, I wear a lot of hats. But I was raised by a single mom who showed me how hard work and determination are the key to living a full life. Each moment has built upon itself, leading me to where I am today: my name is Jessica E. Miranda. I’m the State Representative for Ohio’s 28th Statehouse District, and I’m running for re-election.
When my husband and I made our home in Forest Park, a suburb in the northeast part of Cincinnati, I knew I wanted to play an active role in my childrens’ education. I joined the PTO and began to notice the racial inequities at play. Winton Woods, whose children and families speak a total of 26 languages, had a PTO and school board that did not reflect the diversity and main concerns of its students. To address this, we first began to send home literature in both English and Spanish, in order to engage more of our parents. When I ran for school board, we expanded that program district wide, in addition to securing a raise for our teachers, eliminating school fees and barriers to education, and becoming the second school district in the nation to implement project and problem based learning.
While serving on the school board, I became aware of the significant role the state legislature plays in school funding and regulations and reforms in education. My representative at the time was not an advocate for public schools, and I believed our district deserved better. As the current representative, I have spent the last two years fighting for not only public schools, but also working families, local government, public safety, healthcare, and justice. I have introduced bills to keep our children safe from senseless gun violence, remove dark money from politics, ensure fair school funding, and honor our veterans and public servants. I am running for re-election to continue the work that I have started, and to be a true representative of my community. All Ohioans deserve a fair economy, a quality education, and to feel safe and healthy in their own community. I will continue to fight for this cause in Columbus.
When we first won this seat in 2018, we knocked over 34,000 doors — and won by a razor thin margin of 56 votes. In the age of COVID-19, elections and politics look much different than ever before. The traditional playbook has been thrown out the window. Despite that, this year we have a once-in-a-decade opportunity to end gerrymandering and political corruption in Ohio. We can move forward on issues that matter by electing a new generation of strong, female Democratic candidates. I hope to use my voice to lift up other women like me, but I need your help to amplify that voice.
